Nat "King" Cole "Autumn Leaves"

Nat King Cole's rendition of this classic song. "Autumn Leaves" is a much-recorded popular song. Originally a 1945 French song "Les feuilles mortes" (literally "Dead Leaves") with music by Jacques Prévert and lyrics by poet Joseph Kosma, English lyrics were written in 1947 by the American songwriter Johnny Mercer. It has become a pop standard and a jazz standard in both languages, and as an instrumental. "Les feuilles mortes" was introduced by Yves Montand in 1946 for the film Les Portes de la Nuit. The film Autumn Leaves (1956) starring Joan Crawford featured the song, which was sung by Nat King Cole over the title sequence. The French songwriter Serge Gainsbourg wrote "La chanson de Prévert" as a tribute to this song

Nat & Natalie Cole "Unforgettable"

I think this video is both clever and cute. To my mind there isn't another singer that can deliver a song with such sincerity and velvetness as Nat could. I have just about all of his published recordings. What a voice. Linking Natalie with her Dad was a stroke of genius (though inevitable with todays technology)and the song says it all. I wish I could have met the man. I hope he's crooning them all upstairs...

Nat King Cole - Perfidia

Dave Cavanaugh did the arrangement and conducted the orchestra on this April 14, 1959 Spanish-language recording of one of the prettiest melodies to emerge from the Big Band Era, "Perfidia". The song itself was composed by Alberto Dominguez in 1939 and almost immediately recorded by several of the Big Bands of the time like Xavier Cugat, Benny Goodman, and Jimmy Dorsey. The song was also used to great effect in several scenes for the classic film, "Casablanca". "Perfidia" means "betrayal in love" in English. Nat's version was originally included in the album entitled "A Mis Amigos".

Nat King Cole - The Christmas Song (By The Fireside)

LYRICS Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose, Yuletide carols being sung by a choir, And folks dressed up like Eskimos. Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe, Help to make the season bright, Tiny tots with their eyes all a-glow, Will find it hard to sleep tonight. They know that Santa's on his way He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh, And ev'ry mother's child is gonna spy, To see if reindeer really know how to fly. And so I'm offering this simple phrase, To kids from one to ninety-two, Although it's been said Many times, Many ways Merry Christmas to you. Nat King Cole - Goodnight Irene

"Goodnight, Irene" or "Irene, Goodnight," is a 19th century song written and published as "Goodnight, Irene" in 1886 by Gussie Lord Davis an African American songwriter. The song (by then much altered) was first recorded in 1932 by American musician Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter who claimed he had learned the song from his uncle. The lyrics tell of the singer's troubled past with his love, Irene, and express his sadness and frustration. Several verses make explicit reference to contemplated suicide, most famously in the line "sometimes I take a great notion to jump in the river and drown," which was the inspiration for the 1964 Ken Kesey novel Sometimes a Great Notion. In 1950, US folk group The Weavers recorded a version which became a US #1. Although generally faithful, the Weavers chose to omit some of Leadbelly's more controversial lyrics, leading Time magazine to label it a "dehydrated" and "prettied up" version of the original.[1] Due to the recording's popularity, however, The Weavers' lyrics are the ones generally used today. Subsequent to 1950, the song was recorded by numerous artists across several genres. In 2002, Lead Belly's 1936 Library of Congress recording received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award. The song has also come to fame as being the terrace song for Bristol Rovers FC who play in the English Football League 1. In 1950, one year after Leadbelly's death, the American folk band The Weavers recorded a version of "Goodnight, Irene". The single first reached ...
